Commission Chair Appointed

The Rt Hon Lord Bonomy has agreed to chair an independent Commission looking at the approach to the cremation of infants and the disposal of ashes across Scotland.

The Commission has been set up to determine what lessons can be learned after it recently became clear that crematoria across Scotland were taking different approaches to the disposal of ashes following the cremation of infants.

It is expected that the Commission will make recommendations by the end of the year about how guidance and legislation can be updated to ensure consistent practice nationwide, and to ensure that all bereaved families receive the service, support and information they need.

The independent Commission will be distinct from the investigation being led by former Lord Advocate Dame Elish Angiolini into the disposal of baby ashes at Mortonhall Crematorium in Edinburgh, although the Commission will work closely with Dame Elish and seek to learn from her investigations.
