Pro bono call

Legal charity LawWorks Scotland is urging lawyers to make an annual donation of 10 hours of their time to mark the UK’s 10th Pro Bono Week.

The charity, launched in March this year, was set up to help match lawyers interested in providing pro bono – or free – legal advice to those who need assistance but may not be eligible for legal aid.

The charity’s patron and former Lord Advocate, Dame Elish Angiolini, said: “We know there is significant unmet need in Scotland and, while I would emphasise that pro bono work can never and should never replace a properly funded legal aid system, there are always going to be some cases that fall outside that system."

“There are many in the legal profession who are committed to helping those people who need legal help and advice and Pro Bono Week is a fantastic way to recognise and celebrate the their efforts and encourage others to get involved," she urged. "Just 10 hours of a solicitor or advocate’s time every year could make an enormous difference to people’s lives.”
