Programme of court closures underway

The Scottish Court Service (SCS) has confirmed that its programme of restructuring began this month with the last sitting day at Annan Justice of Peace Court on 14th November.

The programme is part of a series of reforms that are being implemented in order to help to meet the demands for court services over the next ten years, says the SCS. This requires a change in the pattern of providing services across Scotland.  This will allow it to make investments in the courts to provide high quality services as these reforms are implemented.

“We are now in a good position to make the targeted investment required to create a modern structure of courts throughout Scotland,” said SCS Chief Executive Eric McQueen. “Investing in fewer courts will enable us to improve facilities and technology, which will provide better services for all court users, and in particular victims and witnesses.”

“Where sheriff courts are closing we have installed facilities to allow victims and witnesses to use video technology to give evidence or be in contact with the court, where this is allowed by the current legislation,” he added. “Future legislative changes will extend the circumstances where video links are possible in criminal and civil procedures.”

“Throughout the court estate there are already works planned or being carried out to improve accessibility, technology, security and compliance in health and safety.  The changes we have made will make the court service affordable and sustainable over the long term,” said McQueen.
