Crackdown on human trafficking

A proposed Human Trafficking Bill has been announced by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill. The Bill will consolidate and strengthen existing criminal laws, enhance the status of and support for the victims of trafficking and encourage the development of a Scottish Anti-Trafficking Strategy.

“Trafficking human beings and exploiting them through forced labour, domestic servitude, prostitution, or for any other purpose, is an absolutely heinous crime,” said the Justice Secretary.  “Ultimately we are determined to develop legislation that gives our police, prosecutors and other agencies the powers to make Scotland a hostile environment for human traffickers, but also helps to identify and support the needs of victims.”

The proposed legislation is set to be introduced into the Scottish Parliament in this parliamentary session.

Criminal law relating to human trafficking is devolved to Scottish Ministers and the Scottish Parliament, although border control and immigration are reserved.
