DEPUTY CHAIR OF THE SCOTTISH LAND COURT

The Scottish Ministers invite applications from suitably qualified individuals who wish to be considered for appointment as Deputy Chair of the Scottish Land Court. This is a part-time appointment (a commitment of approximately 3 days per week is anticipated) initially for a period of three years at the end of which the Court’s continuing requirements, and the successful applicant’s continued suitability for the post, will be assessed.

Applicants must have been an advocate, a Sheriff, a Sheriff Principal or a solicitor advocate of at least ten years’ standing. The other skills, knowledge and characteristics expected of the office holder are set out in the information for applicants. An independent panel will consider the applications and make recommendations for appointment.

Remuneration for the post is equal, on a pro rata basis, to that of a sheriff (£132,184). The successful candidate, if in practice as an advocate or solicitor advocate, will be permitted to continue in practice but may not appear in the Land Court or the Lands Tribunal for Scotland.

Selection is made solely on merit. The Scottish Government encourages and welcomes applications from the widest possible range of eligible individuals, and would particularly welcome applications from persons with protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010, such as women, people with a disability or those from an ethnic minority background.

As the court is based in Edinburgh, should the successful candidate not live within reasonable commuting distance of the city they will have to make arrangements to attend there as and when required at their own expense. However, the post also involves hearing cases outwith Edinburgh (which may be anywhere in Scotland) for which accommodation and travel expenses will be paid in line with agreed rates.

The application pack can be obtained by contacting Pauline Miller, Civil Law & Legal System Division, Area GW.15, St Andrews House, Regent Road, Edinburgh, EH1 3DG , pauline.miller@scotland.gsi.gov.uk,  0131 244 0357.

Applications should be submitted no later than 30 May, 2015. Interviews will take place in late June.
