Increase in workplace discrimination of pregnant women

A Parliamentary report has called on the Government to bring in new protections for pregnant women after research revealed a 'shocking' increase in workplace pregnancy discrimination in the past ten years.

The report, from the Parliamentary Women and Equalities Select Committee, makes a number of recommendations, including changes to health and safety practices, preventing discriminatory redundancies and an increase in protection for casual, agency and zero-hours workers.

It also recommends the implementation of a system similar to that used in Germany under which new and expectant mothers can be made redundant only in specified circumstances.

The full report is available here. A summary is here and the conclusions and recommendations can be found here.
