Biometric data consultation

The Scottish Government is consulting on how to deliver independent and ethical oversight of the collection and use of biometric data. The proposals include the creation of an independent Scottish Biometrics Commissioner.

The consultation follows a review, carried out by an Independent Advisory Group chaired by SSA President John Scott QC, that considered the taking, use and retention of biometric data in policing. The group reported in March 2018, calling for both a Biometrics Commissioner and a statutory code of practice covering biometric data and technologies.

The new consultation looks at both of these. It seeks views on a draft statutory Code of Practice concerning the use of biometric data and a concept of operations outlining the role of a Scottish Biometrics Commissioner.

The consultation will run until 1st October 2018.

It can be found here.
