SSA - Advocacy Training Day - Saturday 5 October 2019 04/09/2019 A day designed for both criminal and civil practitioners as advocacy skills are common to both areas of practice. Four informative talks followed by an afternoon of practical workshops.

Advocacy Training Day – What works and why – theory and practice – 8 hours CPD

Saturday 5 October 2019, 9.30am – 5pm

Brodies LLP, 110 Queen Street, Glasgow, G1 3BX

The SSA is keen to promote good practice in court for all and as such this training session is open to all Solicitor Advocates and Solicitors with experience in advocacy.  The theme of the day is the developing nature of advocacy in an environment of evolving court procedures.

The day is designed for both criminal and civil practitioners as advocacy skills are common to both areas of practice. The SSA also considers it is useful for practitioners to gain insight into techniques used by others in less familiar settings.

The format for the day will be 4 speakers providing relevant and informative talks in the morning followed by afternoon workshops for participants to learn practical advocacy techniques relevant to both criminal and civil advocacy.

The confirmed Speakers are: -

Lord Clark - The use of written statements and submissions.

Sheriff Alan MacKenzie - Jury Practice.

Jim Cormack QC, Pinsent Masons LLP - Appeal Court Practice.

Kathleen Harper, Head of National Sexual Crimes Unit, COPFS - Taking evidence from children and vulnerable witnesses.

The practical session will be hosted by Tom Marshall and supported by Principal Crown Counsel, Alex Prentice QC.  The exercise will be based on taking evidence on commission from child and vulnerable witnesses.

Materials for the practical session will be sent out to those who reserve their place. Places are limited and there is a charge of £200 per session for non-members and £150 for SSA members which must be paid prior to the session.
